I sit out there sometimes
despite the discomfort
of the narrow, rod-iron steps.

Wonder how all of us
apartment dwellers could scramble
through the cramped space
if a fire broke out
because someone didn’t turn
off their iron.

I had wine out there, alone,
on my August birthday,
the first one since watching
my mother die back home,
and counted taxis.
